Pattern Interrupt Revolution in ADHD
LaurieHi everyone and welcome back to Neuroquirky Nexus. Laurie Bloyer, your host, and so excited to be with you today because we're on a countdown- two weeks, a little under two weeks until we're going to do our online workshop and we're going to flip the script, or we're going to look at things through a new lens. We're just really looking for some quick wins for parents who are frustrated and have tried all the things. I hope what I can offer you will give you some wonderful solutions to really really help. So today we're talking about the pattern interrupt revolution. Something I'll be teaching in the workshop is this thing called pattern interrupt and how it can help transform the ADHD challenges you have with your child in minutes, minutes. So I'd like you to do this, not if you're driving, don't close your eyes, but if you are listening and can close your eyes. Picture this it's 7.30 am. You've already said hurry up 12 times. Your child is still in pajamas, the bus comes in 15 minutes, your stress is rising, their resistance is growing and everyone's morning is falling apart again. Yep, now imagine a completely different scene your child moving excitedly through their morning routine, no reminders needed, actually enjoying the process of getting ready. I know it sounds impossible, doesn't it? But stay with me, because today I'm sharing the exact method that's helping ADHD families transform their daily battles into moments of connection and success. So again, welcome to our podcast. I'm so excited you're here and, as an ADHD parent coach, I really my goal is to help you have peace in your family and joy and success in your family, and I'm so excited to share with you what I have today the Pattern Interrupt Revolution.
ADHD Brain -Keys for Success
LaurieAll right, so let's get real about what's happening in ADHD households right now. In your household, probably You've tried morning routine charts that worked for maybe two days. You've tried reward systems that created more stress than success. Perhaps perhaps Every child is very different, but in general, you've tried, maybe, timer techniques that turned into countdown battles. Maybe you've even tried consequence systems that left into countdown battles. Maybe you even tried consequence systems that left everyone feeling awful. Well, here's what typically happens, right? You research solutions, you find a new system, you implement it with hope, you see a brief improvement, watch it slowly unravel and then you feel failed again. But here's what nobody tells you. The problem isn't your parenting and it's not your child's ADHD. It's that we're trying to fit a unique, creative, differently wired brain into strategies designed for neurotypical thinking.
LaurieLet me share with you a quick story about Maya, a mom I worked with recently. Her nine-year-old son would spend 45 minutes getting ready quote unquote but somehow still wouldn't be dressed when it was time to leave. She tried everything charts, rewards, consequences. Nothing worked. Why? Because we were solving the wrong problem.
Transform Your Morning
LaurieIn comes the pattern interrupt concept. What is a pattern interrupt? Think of it like changing the channel when a TV show isn't working for you. You're not trying to fix the show, we're choosing a different program. And here's the science behind why it works.
LaurieThe ADHD brain craves novelty. It engages deeply with high-interest-based tasks. It responds to movement and story. It seeks connection over correction. I hope you heard all that. If you need to go back and listen again, or maybe I'll just say it again ADHD brain craves novelty, engages deeply with interest-based tasks, responds to movement and story and seeks connection over correction. Connection is what we really need here. So let's break this down. When Maya's son was not getting ready, he wasn't being defiant, his brain wasn't engaged.
Why This Method Works!
LaurieThe traditional morning routine was like trying to watch a boring TV show. His brain naturally checked out, of course. But watch what happens when we interrupt this pattern. Instead of get ready for school, get ready for school, get ready for school. We create a morning mission control or whatever your child is interested in, and we can go into those in the workshop, but let's just stick with the space theme. So, morning mission control.
LaurieLet me show you exactly how this transforms your morning. A traditional morning picture. This, right, a traditional morning, would be put on your clothes, brush your teeth, get your backpack. Hurry up, we're running late. Oh my gosh, are you listening? Are you listening? Hello, I've told you 20 times and it's only not even 8 am yet. Right, that would be a traditional morning, but in our mission control, morning commander, ready to start your mission.
LaurieFirst stop equipment station, suit up for today's adventure. Yes, we're requiring a little creativity, yes, a little imagination, but, wow, has your child's brain probably just clicked on by now? Right, okay, the next mission is your fuel station for power-up breakfast. Final checkpoint launch pad preparation. You hear that. You hear the change that we made. How much more fun is that for your ADHD child's brain than hurry up, get ready, we're running late. How relaxed is that If you're not necessarily a creative parent? Time to channel your inner child. Right, because the tasks haven't changed, but the story has, and here's why this matters specifically for the ADHD brain. It creates novelty, which is essential for dopamine. The ADHD brain is consistently seeking dopamine. Each mission checkpoint creates a small dopamine hit.
LaurieNovel approaches activate reward pathways. The brain stays engaged because it's experiencing something new. Even familiar tasks feel fresh in a new context. It adds movement, which supports processing. Adhd brains process information better with physical movement. Moving between stations helps transition between tasks. Physical action helps cement mental processes and cement short-term memory into long-term memory. Movement creates natural energy release and the body's motion helps maintain focus.
LaurieIsn't this amazing? Look at this. Just one tiny little shift. And look at all of that behind the scenes. That's going on. It builds story. It enhances memory.
LaurieAdhd brains love narrative connections. Stories create natural sequence and flow. Each step has meaning within the larger mission. The brain remembers stories better than lists. Narrative framework makes tasks more memorable. It also removes shame because it builds confidence. No more, why can't you just moments? Struggles become part of the adventure. Mistakes are just plot twists.
Real-Life Success Stories
LaurieSuccess feels achievable and natural and the focus shifts from fixing to exploring Again. And that's just amazing. One tiny little shift Again. Isn't this just amazing? One tiny little shift. It matches natural motivation patterns by using interest-based nervous system activities. It creates clear, achievable checkpoints, provides immediate feedback, makes progress visible and celebrates small wins. Naturally, isn't that amazing. I just I'm in love with this. Naturally, isn't that amazing. I just I'm in love with this. So I really hope you're getting the download, because I do walk you through all of the steps of this in our download. So do make sure to get that in the show notes.
Creating Your Own Pattern Interrupt
LaurieBut I just really just want to say the key to understanding that pattern interrupts aren't just cute ideas, right? This is a strategic, science-based interrupts aren't just cute ideas, right? This is a strategic, science-based, science-backed method. It's a tool that works with your child's brain wiring. We're not changing what needs to be done, we're changing how the brain perceives and processes these tasks. Think of it like this If you're trying to get somewhere in a car, you can either push against it, which is exhausting and ineffective, or you can turn on the engine and work with how the car was designed to move. Pattern interrupts are like turning on your child's engine. I know I've used a lot of analogies in this one, but I think it really helps us see how our child's brain is working when you do this little shift, suddenly you have momentum working with you instead of resistance working against you. So I had to tell a mom recently I spent three years trying to force my son to follow a morning routine. Two days into mission control mornings he was leading the way. I actually cried watching him excitedly move through his morning tasks. That's the power of working with the ADHD brain instead of against it. The key is understanding that pattern interrupts aren't just cute ideas. They're strategic tools that work with your child's brain wiring. That work with your child's brain wiring.
LaurieI'm going to share with you three real transformations that happened with clients and students of mine. First one the homework revolution. Before Jamie would take two hours to complete 30 minutes of homework. In comes the pattern interrupt, we created power-up stations and so that would be a standing station for high energy, a cozy corner for deep focus and movement breaks built in and, as a result, homework now takes them about 45 minutes, but with less stress. The morning miracle before constant battles and late starts. After the pattern interrupt, we included an adventure path and this included a mission control with the bedroom equipment station for the clothes, a fuel station for breakfast, a launch pad at the door, he was on time for school and even had a few smiles in there. Then we had the bedtime breakthrough. So before it was 90 minutes of battles and questions and water and everything you can think of or you know in your family. Once we introduced pattern interrupt, there was a space station shutdown. So he would go through a space station shutdown where the systems check right, the pajamas would be put on, cool down procedure, teeth, bathroom and the landing sequence, the bed and the results. It all got done in about 30 minutes and it was fun and there was no yelling.
ADHD Pattern Interrupt Workshop Invitation
LaurieSo the magic isn't just in the themes, it's in how they match ADHD brain wiring. You need clear visual clues or cues, however you want to write them. Cards with pictures. You need movement built in so they can solidify and put things into long-term memory. They need engagement, whether that's through a story or music and hopefully you guys have taken my quiz so you know how best your child learns and in the workshop we can focus on their learning style and integrate these into the learning style. And then, of course, you need to incorporate the natural flow. So those are the themes that really help with working with the ADHD brain and that unique wiring.
LaurieAll right, let's get busy here, let's do some work. We're going to create your first pattern interrupt. So I will have a download here in the show notes. But if you want, for right now, grab a pen and paper and I'll walk you through your first pattern. Interrupt. Here we go.
LaurieI want you to identify your stuck point. Where do you face daily battles? What time of day is hardest? Which tasks create more resistance? Then I want you to find the natural energy. What excites your child? What are their current interests? When do they show the most focus?
LaurieAnd then create your story. Turn it into space, a space-themed journey. Add movement between points, include clear visual markers. Of course, keep it simple. Keep it simple this whole thing. Quick, simple. Please know I'm not trying to add more to your already incredibly busy lives, I know.
LaurieStart with just two or three stations, maybe four if you really need to Use what you have. Make it easy to reset. This really should take a minute or two to set up, a minute or two to do for the next day or the middle of the day or the evening, and then plan for evolution, right, as you don't want to do the same story for 10 years from now. Right, you want to evolve as your child evolves. Adhd brains need novelty, so you're going to have to evolve this several times. Prepare alternate themes, right, what does your child like? And be ready to adapt. If it's not working, don't quit on the first day, but if it's not working after three or four times, be ready to adapt.
LaurieThe key is starting small One pattern. Interrupt in one situation for one day. Start small, don't overwhelm yourself, don't overwhelm your child. Okay, I really hope those were very helpful. As we wrap up, I just want you to remember this that your child's ADHD brain isn't broken. It's uniquely wired for creativity, movement and engagement.
LauriePattern interrupts aren't about fixing problems. They're about creating environments where ADHD strengths can shine. Start with one pattern. Interrupt tomorrow or, depending on when you're listening to this, maybe you'll get to one tonight. Decide on which is more important right, morning, afternoon, evening. Watch what happens, from correction to connection, from tasks to journey, from struggle to story.
LaurieIf you want to dive deeper into these strategies, though, I really encourage you to come work with me and join our workshop on January 25th in the evening, and you'll learn more ways to transform this ADHD challenge into strengths. Join us for this online workshop and you'll complete a toolkit like this of pattern interrupts, plus support in implementing them, plus, oh so much more we're going to learn in 90 minute quick workshop. I'm going to give you a lot of tips and strategies based on the quiz that you will be taking ahead of time to know your child's strengths or, as a lot of people like to say, their superpowers. So links and resources are all mentioned in the show notes below, and I really just look forward to meeting you on the 25th and helping you with your child. I really hope you enjoyed this pattern interrupt message and I will talk to you next week in our next podcast. So until then, keep it quirky, bye-bye.
